Rachel Talks to RSO about Gray Matters

July 2006

I asked Rachel if she could give us some more details about the film Gray Matters and her role in it. The Film is due to be released in the USA on 14th February 2007, it is expected that it will open in the UK and Europe a few weeks after. This is what Rachel had to say:

Can you tell us a little bit about this film and your role in it?

It's a romantic comedy starring Heather Graham, Bridget Moynahan, Alan Cumming, Sissy Spacek and Thomas Cavanagh. Heather plays a character called Gray, who is discovering her sexuality for the first time. I play her boss who helps her on that road to discovery...

The film is billed as a comedy, how is this role similar or different to what you have done in the past?

You know, I haven't actually seen the film yet as I've missed all the screenings due to work! So it's hard for me to know exactly how the final cut panned out, whether they chose to make me serious or a little bit comedic. I'm a strong business woman, with a gentler side out of work, not too dissimilar from a certain woman called Helena Peabody. One of the producers is a huge L Word fan, and that's why they approached me for the role. So, it's very similar in some ways, but different from most of my work pre The L Word.

As the film was shot in the summer of 2005 how did you juggle this and filming the L Word?

For a long time it looked like it wasn't going to work out - I had been offered the role but our schedule on The L Word changes so frequently I couldn't be confirmed. I was very lucky that a certain individual on The L Word production team at the time was also a good friend of a producer on Gray Matters, and between them they juggled it to work. I was very grateful to him for that! What I do remember is shooting very late one night on Gray Matters, until the early hours, and having to get up just a few hours later to do the stills campaign for The L Word. But don't tell anyone else that.

Do you have any memorable stories from the set?

It was a really great film to work on. There was a really wonderful atmosphere on set and  I am still regularly in touch with some of the team. Alan Cumming was also switching back and forth from the Gray Matters set to The L Word set, and he was a blast to be around, so much energy. It was quite an exhausting period.
There was one boardroom scene, which I don't want to spoil for you so I won't go into details, but a great actress called April Telek had us all in hysterics. And then she showed up the other week in a small role on The L Word.  We were all losing it as we worked into the early hours, laughing so hard at April and at Heather Graham who was just lovely and very very funny.  I have great memories of it and feel very lucky to have been involved.
